Dog/cat GPS tracker battery life: real figures by brand
Updated on 28 October 2026 · By the Pepsy team (French GPS tracker brand) · Prices and figures taken from official websites on 28/10/2026.
In short: in standard use, Pepsy DOG and CAT last up to 14 days per charge. The Tractive DOG 6 lasts about 6 days without a power saving zone and up to 14 days with one (home Wi-Fi); the CAT 6 Mini 4 days without and 7 days with. The Weenect XS lasts about 2 days in continuous tracking and up to 7 days with power saving zones. In Live mode, all trackers run flat in 1 to 2 days, or even less.
Why battery life figures are hard to compare
Each brand measures battery life under its own conditions. Before comparing two figures, you need to know which "mode" is meant:
- Continuous tracking / Live: a position every few seconds. This is the mode that uses the most power, whatever the brand.
- Standard use: regular positions, but not continuously, and the tracker goes to sleep when the animal isn't moving.
- Power saving zone (Tractive, Weenect): when the tracker detects the home Wi-Fi, it pauses the GPS. Battery life increases a lot if the animal spends its days at home, much less if it is often outdoors.
An "up to 14 days" achieved thanks to home Wi-Fi is therefore not the same as an "up to 14 days" in standard use. That's why we give both columns below, with sources.
Table: real battery life by brand and model
| Model | Without power saving zone / standard use | With power saving zone | Continuous Live tracking | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pepsy DOG | Up to 14 days | Not needed to reach 14 days | 24 to 48 h | Pepsy |
| Pepsy CAT | Up to 14 days | Not needed to reach 14 days | 24 to 48 h | Pepsy |
| Tractive DOG 6 | Up to 6 days | Up to 14 days | Greatly reduces battery life | help.tractive.com |
| Tractive CAT 6 Mini | Up to 4 days | Up to 7 days | Greatly reduces battery life | help.tractive.com |
| Tractive DOG 6 XL | Up to 20 days | Up to 6 weeks | Greatly reduces battery life | tractive.com |
| Weenect XS (cat / small dog) | About 2 days (continuous tracking) | Up to 7 days | About 2 days | weenect.com |
| Pepsy MINI (objects) | Up to 30 days on standby | - | Shorter | Pepsy |
| Pepsy XL (vehicles) | Up to 90 days on standby | - | Shorter | Pepsy |
The Weenect help centre also mentions up to 10 days for the XS with a power saving zone and airplane mode, and 3 days in continuous tracking. We used the figures from the French product page (2 days / 7 days).
What really drains a GPS tracker's battery
1. Live mode
Live mode sends a position every few seconds. It is essential for finding a lost animal, but it divides battery life by 5 to 10. Keep it for active searches, not everyday use.
2. Mobile network quality
A tracker with poor reception (cellar, dead zone, mountains) constantly searches for a network and uses much more power. Weenect states that battery life can drop below 24 h if the network is very poor. This is true for all cellular trackers.
3. Position frequency
A position every 30 seconds uses much more power than one every 10 minutes. Most apps let you adjust this interval.
4. Cold
As with a smartphone, lithium batteries lose capacity in very cold weather. Expect shorter battery life in winter, when hiking or in the mountains.
How many charges per month? The practical calculation
For a dog that goes out several hours a day, away from home Wi-Fi:
- Pepsy DOG (up to 14 days in standard use): about 2 to 3 charges per month.
- Tractive DOG 6 (up to 6 days without a zone, a little more with the hours spent at home): about 5 charges per month.
- Weenect XS (2 days continuous, up to 7 days with zones): from 5 to more than 10 charges per month depending on time spent at home.
These figures are estimates based on manufacturer data. They depend on your network and your use of Live mode. The real risk isn't charging itself, it's forgetting: a flat tracker on the day your pet runs away is useless. The longer the battery life, the lower this risk.
Tips to last 14 days (and more)
- Charge at 20% rather than 0%: the app warns you when the battery is low.
- Only activate Live mode to search for your pet.
- Avoid leaving the tracker in the sun or in the cold when it isn't being worn.
- Keep the firmware up to date: battery optimisations often come with updates.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Pepsy GPS tracker battery last?
Pepsy DOG and CAT last up to 14 days per charge in standard use, and 24 to 48 h in continuous Live mode. The MINI lasts up to 30 days on standby and the XL up to 90 days on standby.
How long does the Tractive DOG 6 battery last?
According to Tractive, up to 6 days without a power saving zone and up to 14 days with one (the GPS is paused when the dog is within range of the home Wi-Fi). The CAT 6 Mini lasts up to 4 days without a zone and 7 days with one.
How long does the Weenect XS battery last?
Weenect announces about 2 days in continuous tracking and up to 7 days with power saving zones, on its French product page. Its help centre mentions up to 10 days with a zone and airplane mode.
Why does my GPS tracker drain quickly?
The three main causes are using Live mode, a weak mobile network (the tracker constantly searches for a signal) and a position interval that is too short. Cold also reduces battery capacity.
Which dog GPS has the best battery life?
Among standard models (excluding large XL formats), Pepsy DOG offers up to 14 days in standard use, without relying on a Wi-Fi zone. For very large dogs, the Tractive DOG 6 XL announces up to 6 weeks with a power saving zone, in a heavier device.
